Digitizing Embroidery

Indian Shield

by Carolina Stitch Embroidery and Digitizing

This Applique Embroidery Patch was created by the combined effort of two professionals. Special thanks to Nancy Blankenship
who produced the patch from our digitized design.
Creating this piece of art was no simple task considering what we had to work with from the beginning. As you read below you can see the outline of the steps we took in order to achieve these excellent results.

Step 1. Original Art supplied by the customer:

This artwork came to us with the following requirements:

  1. The feathers needed to be changed to look more like real Eagle feathers.
  2. All feathers had to have the light blue in the quill area.
  3. The feather quills needed to all look like they were slid through slits in the shield face.
  4. The straight black line through the center needed to be over the white circle line on
      the right side.
  5. The heavy black outlines on the feathers had to be eliminated.
  6. None of the feathers could touch or overlap except the center ones that crossed.
  7. The colors needed to be more vibrant.
  8. Needed it in two sizes, 8"and 12".
  9. Also needed to be put on a 3' by 5' and 5' by 7' completely finished flag.
10. Quality artwork needed to be generated to use on Vinyl stickers and for screen printing.
11. The customer wanted the entire design embroidered.

Step 2. First Generation of artwork presented to the customer:

The customer liked what we had done but was still not completely
happy with the look of the feathers:

  1. The straight black line now had to go under the white line on both sides.
      The black line signifies death.
The white circle over the black line signifies life, closed at both ends life goes on forever.
  2. We asked the customer to help supply us with some pictures of feathers they
thought would represent the correct look for the feathers.
The center crossed feathers represent the Mother Earth and the Father.
The remainder of the feathers represent the children.
  3. We suggested that the customer consider using applique instead of having the entire
design completed in stitches. This would help to keep the embroidery costs in check
and explained that we felt it would add more realism to the shield by having fabric in the
larger areas. It would also be better for the flag because it would "Flow" in the wind
correctly. Filled with stitches it would tend to make the design "Stiffer" and less plyable.

Step 3. Second Generation of artwork presented to the customer:

The customer liked this version and approved it for production.

  1. The customer agreed that we should use applique to complete the patch.
  2. We now began the process of digitizing the artwork and getting quotes from the people
who could supply us with the vinyl stickers.
  3. The completed digitized design "weighed in" at a little over 121,000 stitches for the
12" design! It was a good choice we decided to applique at least based
      on the stitch count.
  4. As you will see below in the bluish portion of the feathers quill, we used a multiple
overlapping fill of varigated (color changing) thread to provide the soft fading color.
  5. We contacted Nancy and asked her to take a look and give us a quote.
We asked Nancy based on her reputation as a specialist in the field of applique
embroidery and we knew she would have the tools and knowledge to provide us with the
highest quality product we expect in everything we do.
  6. Here we learned the Blue section represented the Sky, the Green section the Earth,
The Yellow were the Heavens and the Red was the Underworld.
